The Seventh-day Adventist Church in Kenya
The Seventh-day Adventist Church is a Christian church worldwide that professes to be based on the Bible and the teachings of Ellen G. White and early Adventists.
The central beliefs of the church are summarized in the Apostles' Creed and first five. The church is officially recognised by the Government of Kenya as a Christian church. Most Kenyan SDA churches are affiliated to the Canadian based North American Division, in contrast to the East African Division which has its main headquarters in Kenya. The church is reported to have a membership of 200,000 individuals.
The beginnings of the church in Kenya are related to the growth of the British East Africa Protectorate. In 1947, the leading British SDA Church leader in East Africa, Bill Dankenbring, was sent to Kenya to establish a mission in the city of Nairobi.
The location of Nairobi was considered to be the center of the Kikuyu Kingdom, one of the traditional kingdoms in the area. The Kikuyu people have also been called Kikuyu the most populous people in Kenya. Although the Kikuyu had a strong following, the British government, which controlled Nairobi, wanted to use Nairobi as a strategic center for the colonisation of Kenya. The original members of the church were the British (including the MI6-trained Kenyan intelligence service) and the Kikuyu.
In July 1949, the church headquarters were established in Nairobi with Rev. Dankenbring as head pastor. With his missionary focus on winning African converts, Dankenbring and his staff established the South East Africa Conference, headquarters at Nairobi.
